Grammarly is the incumbent AI writing assistant, and its superpower has never been the grammar engine alone - it is ubiquity. The browser extension and desktop apps check and improve your writing inside Gmail, Slack, Google Docs, LinkedIn, and nearly anywhere else you type, with tone detection and generative AI rewrites layered on top. Premium's suggestions go well beyond typo-catching into clarity, conciseness, and full-sentence rewrites. The honest knock is that its style advice can be aggressively bland - accept every suggestion and your writing converges on the same corporate-neutral voice - and Premium's price is hard to justify now that ChatGPT and built-in AI in Google and Microsoft tools handle rewriting for free or cheaper. Buy it if polished everyday writing across many apps is core to your job. Skip it if you mainly write in one tool that already has decent AI assistance built in.
Why we rate it
- Works nearly everywhere you type via browser extension and desktop apps
- Catches clarity and conciseness issues that basic spellcheckers miss
- Tone detection helps calibrate emails before you hit send
Keep in mind
- Style suggestions push everyone toward the same flat, corporate voice
